Event Timeline

HI @Pnorman - is there somewhere that we can take a look at details of the brighmed map style?

The code is at https://github.com/kartotherian/brighmed

The cartography is based off of the previous style, and I've been posting some progress screenshots to IRC. Now that this issue is created, I can post them here.

looking good, @Pnorman ! I'm excited to see it in action....and will labeling make sense as you zoom in? :)

As requested, names that rotate as you zoom in. This doesn't work on lines, so I embossed them instead.

I'm not sure what make sense means

The same area from osm-bright.tm2 looks like this

Love it!!! I'm sure I will have more improvement ideas soon :))))) Seriously though, Paul, well done, the style looks very clean. What major/minor things are left to do?

Hi @Pnorman - sometimes when users zoom in, the smaller streets get the labels, rather than the larger streets (because of label collisions)...or there aren't enough labels displaying for a user to make sense of the map. So far, with your sample above - it looks like labels are not colliding - thus displaying the labels that make sense based on the zoom level.

I'd still love to have an environment to play in to see the new style in action. :) Keep up the good work!

Label placements will always be an issue. I wouldn't say the street label placements are particularly good, and it comes down to conflicting requirements between using vector tiles, performance, cut off labels, and label density.

It has been decided that because we don't have a dedicated user-focused product manager for maps changes we can't make material product changes for maps, so the new styles work will not be deployed.
