Update the "W" app icon to be i18n-friendly
Open, LowPublic

Description

Problem

The "W" icon being used as the app icon is not i18n-friendly, and cannot be localized.
The icon should also conform to updated Material guidelines (per T146399)

Proposed

Come up with a new app icon design that is i18n-friendly at a small size, potentially a simplified version of the puzzle globe icon.

Quotes from recent longitudinal study on iOS

  • I would like the app icon to not use the W, but rather the wiki globe that truly represents all languages of Wikipedia. The W is just a letter that does not represent the name of the project in many languages, and not even their alphabets: it is an anglocentric adding that does not benefit the diversity that we have. The title of the app once it is open, should not be "Wikipedia" but rather the name of the free encyclopedia in the first chosen language (or perhaps both, the first language + English). That is a simple change with a lot of meaning for the minoritized language users

Event Timeline

Ohh, yeah, that was intended for seasonal icons, but we might be able to use for localization too.
