Move Help:Preferences from Meta to Mediawiki.org, update it and mark it for translation
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Preferences is not up to date.

Also, that page is located on Meta while it should be on Mediawiki.org for consistency concerning documentation.
It is translated manually, outside of the translate extension. Most translations I've checked are clearly outdated.

This task to:

  • move the documentation to mw.org
  • update the documentation
  • mark it for translation
  • tell translators about it

Event Timeline

Hi, I'd like to volunteer for this task and help complete it. @Trizek-WMF Could I please know what type of updates are needed to the documentation. I can create it in my sandbox and make the updates for review.

Hello @Areefa, and thank you for your interest.

If I had a list of things to update, I would have already done the job. :) My best advice for you is to check the preference on a few wikis and review what is already written. Then you can make the updates.

@Nikitrain I'm currently working on the updates :)

@Trizek-WMF I compared the Help:Preferences documentation with my Preferences page.
I created an updated documentation at: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Areefat/Sandbox/help_preferences
A few areas I was unclear were;

  • The Search tab - The documentation leads the user to this page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Search, however the preferences section does have a few options.
  • The Gadgets tab - The documentation leads the user to the extensions page, whereas the preferences sections contains the list of gadgets that can be enables.
  • The preferences page (of the user) does not contain the Threaded discussion tab, Uploads tab and the Pending Changes/Edit review tab.

Please let me know how to proceed with the above and any changes.
Thanks

Thanks for working on this. There are a few red links on your page on mediawiki.org. These red links need to get fixed either by linking to an appropriate page which is on mediawiki.org, or by fixing the link to the page on meta.wikimedia.org by using the corresponding link prefix for meta.

The Search tab - The documentation leads to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Search, however the preferences section does have a few options.

Looks like the text is incorrect and needs to get updated to cover the current situation.

The Gadgets tab - The documentation leads the user to the extensions page,

Only if the user is interested in "technical information about the Gadgets extension".

whereas the preferences sections contains the list of gadgets that can be enables.

How is that a problem?

The preferences page (of the user) does not contain the Threaded discussion tab,

The text says "The Threaded discussion tab appears only on wikis with the LiquidThreads discussion system installed."

Uploads tab

It could say that this tab appears only on wikis with the UploadWizard extension installed.

and the Pending Changes/Edit review tab.

The text says that it requires FlaggedRevisions to be installed.

For the records, on every MediaWiki installation, the page Special:Version lists which extensions are installed on that wiki.

Areefa, be careful of the wiki you are on. all the wikis don't have the same preferences. I think you should focus by order on

  1. the default installation for Mediawiki
  2. then have a way to add every preference that is common to every Wikimedia wiki.
  3. have something about extensions used on a few wikis only. That last one is optional, given the fact that we have a lot of existing extensions that can impact Preferences.

Proceeding step by step will help you to have every preference included.

Thank you, I will go through them carefully.

@Areefa: No reply, hence I am resetting the assignee of this task because there has not been progress lately (please correct me if I am wrong!). Resetting the assignee avoids the impression that somebody is already working on this task. It also allows others to potentially work towards fixing this task. Please claim this task again when you plan to work on it (via Add Action...Assign / Claim in the dropdown menu) - it would be welcome. Thanks for your understanding!

DannyS712 triaged this task as Low priority.

(not something that a patch is needed for)
