Hello there! I have a couple of questions related to the pulsating dot onboarding pattern, which we'll be reusing soon in the context of Wikidata. Thanks already to whoever jumps in to help 🙏🏻

What I'm trying to find out is:

  1. What type of interaction would trigger the popover on desktop: hover or click? I've found both approaches implemented in a quick code search, but I'm interested on what would be the design recommendation. Personally, hover seems more obvious to me.
  1. Which factor or combination of factors have determined the disappearance of this onboarding element in its different contexts (Visual editor, Growth experiments) before? Some possible approaches:
  • External time: the onboarding dot was displayed consistently for a predetermined duration
  • Number of visualizations: i.e. users saw this only once (guess this is only doable for logged-in sessions)
  • User preference: users were offered the possibility to dismiss the onboarding icon permanently through a "don't show this again" option
  • Interaction-based: the dot disappeared the moment the users performed a specific action (e.g. opened a menu in the VE) or reach a certain milestone

Hi @Sarai - IMO the implementation on VE that the pop-up is triggered on click/tap is better for accessibility across mobile/touch devices and desktop instead of hover. I'm curious about the cases where it is on hover as I wonder if that could be for when it triggers onboarding via Extension:GuidedTour which is only available on Desktop...

For Growth, it appears on the edit icon/tab on the article when someone opens a (non-structured) Suggested edit, and remains there until the person clicks on it (see T244435) - the 'interaction-based option' in your approaches list. I believe it is the same for the pulsating dots on the VE toolbar. It seems like an option for either interaction-based or user-preference (show X times, or until user selects "don't show again") seems more pragmatic.
