Add Olympedia data via Mix'n'Match
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

[COPIED]

The Olympedia mix'n'match catalog is available at https://mix-n-match.toolforge.org/#/catalog/4628. Particularly via https://mix-n-match.toolforge.org/#/list/4628/auto, users can review suggestions and add missing Olympedia identifiers to Wikidata items via "Confirm", or reject the suggestion via "Remove". There is plenty to do, and still many easy cases to process.

The data (identifier, name, country, discipline) was scraped from Olympedia itself. It currently contains all listed 2020 Summer Olympics participants (11882 in total) except for Hockey players which are currently not available from Olympedia due to a bug. If necessary, I will update the catalog since there are still updates on Olympedia's side.

Theklan created this task.

Almost 4800 identifiers have meanwhile been added via this catalog, only few are currently remaining:

  • Around 260 entries are currently sitting in the "Not applicable to Wikidata" section (https://mix-n-match.toolforge.org/#/list/4628/na). These are Olympedia profiles about referees and/or coaches mainly. While I think that these persons can generally be equipped with a Wikidata item, I think we should put them aside for the moment and focus on the athletes.
  • Around 300 entries about athletes are still waiting to be matched in the "Unmatched" section (https://mix-n-match.toolforge.org/#/list/4628/unmatched). Many of these are apparently alternate athletes without active participation, or athletes with difficult names, or athletes that have not yet been matched to any Wikidata item. It is helpful to investigate these case via the "entry" pages in mix-n-match, such as for instance https://mix-n-match.toolforge.org/#/entry/115708660. You can access these entry pages via the blue "#" sign in front of the athlete name if you hover over them in the "Unmatched" list.

@Theklan: Thanks for participating in the Hackathon! We hope you had a great time.

  • If this task was being worked on and resolved at the Hackathon: Please change the task status to resolved via the Add Action...Change Status dropdown.
  • If this task is still valid and should stay open: Please add another active project tag to this task, so others can find this task (as likely nobody in the future will look back at the Hackathon workboard when trying to find something they are interested in).
  • In case there is nothing else to do for this task, or nobody plans to work on this task anymore: Please set the task status to declined.

This is more or less complete. Results:

  • ~11800 Participants were retrieved from Olympedia roughly a week ago and loaded to the mix'n'match tool.
  • 6800 identifiers were already matched to Wikidata items before this task was started
  • some 4500–5000 have been added additionally via mix'n'match
  • There are now around 300 entries from the catalog which do not directly qualify for a Wikidata item (coaches, referees, deleted entries), and ~75 for sportspersons without active participation according to Olympedia. As much as I am aware, there are no existing Wikidata items for these entries. They could probably be created, but this has no importance.
