I don't think they do. Can someone provide usage examples and explain the motivation for adding these? As far as I can tell, these are groups and not languages.

Gallo is fr-gallo. Lorrain doesn't have a language tag.

The "Oïl language" item represents an entire group of languages which includes Gallo and Lorrain, as well as other languages we already support like standard French, Picard, Walloon and Norman.

Lorrain might be a bit tricky. UNESCO describes it as « fr-lor », which isn't true (fr-lor means French from Lorraine, not Lorrain...). Some linguists consider it to be a group of languages, but, throughout history, the most commonly accepted description tends towards lorrain being a language on its own, with local variants (which themselves vary between each linguists).

For the sake of simplicity, let's follow the most common opinion : lorrain is a language.

Besides langcom approval, we also need language codes. So far only Gallo has been provided.

But these languages don't have one ; that's why we reported that issue.

Aparté : Glottolog code for Lorrain : lorr1242

Hello ! When I ask to add Oïl languages it’s for all oïl languages, not for the language family. So there the list to add :

  • angevin (Q56782)
  • champenois (Q430018)
  • bourguignon-morvandiau (Q508332)
  • franc-comtois (Q510561)
  • poitevin-saintongeais (Q514123)
  • berrichon (Q2899128)
  • bourbonnais (Q2922261)
  • mayennais (Q3302952)
  • parler sarthois (Q3365567)
  • percheron (Q3375142)
  • orléanais (Q28497058)
  • tourangeau (Q30742253)

There is a very big problem to need a languages codes. There is so many languages without it AND it’s always little language used by minorities. It’s terribly difficult to help, describe and write in these language here, when it shouldn't.

There is a very big problem to need a languages codes. There is so many languages without it AND it’s always little language used by minorities. It’s terribly difficult to help, describe and write in these language here, when it shouldn't.

But is there a real use case for monolingual properties in those languages? If there's only a one time use, then you should use mis (miscellaneous), because changing the code so minority languages can be used will make this a significant change.
If there are valid use cases then please provide them, so WMDE can make a better judgment if it's worth changing the code to make this possible.
