Alter how section editing works to allow `section=Personal_life` to edit the section called "Personal life" etc., rather than just `section=3`
Closed, DuplicatePublicFeature

Description

A search returned nothing.

The problem, per this Village Pump post, is that "the section attribute in the url only works with numbers on Wikiquote, and not section titles". Can you please change the settings so that it can be a number or a section name?

Thanks.

Hi @Koavf, thanks for taking the time to report this. Not sure I understasnd. Can you please provide:

  • a clear and complete list of exact steps to reproduce the situation, step by step, so that nobody needs to guess or interpret how you performed each step,
  • what happens after performing these steps to reproduce,
  • what you expected to happen instead,
  • a full link to a web address where the issue can be seen.

Ideally, a good description should allow any other person to follow these steps (without having to interpret steps) and see the same results. Problems that others can reproduce can get fixed faster. Thanks again.

For example this link on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fatih&action=edit&section=History edits the appropriate section versus this link on Wikiquote: https://en.wikiquote.org/w/index.php?title=Joe_Biden&action=edit&section=Quotes fails and defaults to the lead section.

Ah, so you want the section URL parameter to accept the heading string, instead of the section number only. I see, thanks!

Yes.

For example this link on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fatih&action=edit&section=History edits the appropriate section

This is not the case for me, it edits the lead section (section 0).

That’s weird I just tried it and got the same result, last time I checked it behaved how I said.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter what’s happening on Wikipedia, can this be fixed?

For example this link on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fatih&action=edit&section=History edits the appropriate section

It leads me to the whole page (VE, source mode).

Ok, I must've made a mistake originally thinking this worked differently on Wikipedia, but this still needs to be done anyway.

OK, I've re-titled this to be clearer that this is a feature request.
