Confirmed how that configuration works using the beta cluster.

@RolandUnger after some investigation we figured out that the nearby layer that is currently enabled on dewikivoyage is configured on the local wiki. Would you like to coordinate so you disable it on the day we deploy the new nearby feature? We are ready to deploy any time.

As @WMDE-Fisch wrote above it should be straightforward:

Settings for the special layers used in the Wikivoyage maps are configured on the Wiki's. Each has a configuration in the MediaWiki:namespace. The community can disable the Wikivoyage nearby feature themself by removing the layers in their local configuration. For de.wikivoyage this should be lines 185 and 186 in the current version of the file. https://de.wikivoyage.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Kartographer.js#L-185

Scheduled for today 3pm. We'll disable the Wikivoyage nearby feature by using a config change.
