Description

Requested by @Tagishsimon at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:New_pages_patrol/Reviewers#Floating_footer

Reasons/Benefits

  • taking up too much screen real estate
  • in general, good to unfloat stuff when possible
  • makes Special:NewPagesFeed hard to use on mobile

Footer to delete:

Where to move things:

Acceptance criteria
  • move 2 buttons from footer to header
  • move stats from footer, to an ⓘ information icon in the header. when clicked, it displays a tooltip with the stats
  • delete the footer

Event Timeline

Hey cant we have it in this way

@Punith.nyk I would ask you to start from the designs at T347732 instead of the existing feed.

Are the Special:NewPagesFeed footer stats worth keeping? I see several problems right off the bat.

  • That second line is just completely inaccurate (bug)
  • The "oldest: 5005 days" is not useful because it is counting pages from the early 2000's that were recently un-BLAR'd

edit: When I run it on enwiki a few days later I am getting the following. It's possible I had my filter settings non-standard above, or there may be a bug.

My current thinking is:

Thoughts?

There were two objections to deleting the footer stats when I asked over at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:New_pages_patrol/Reviewers#Does_anyone_find_the_stats_in_the_Special%3ANewPagesFeed_footer_useful%3F

New idea: Same as the screenshot above, but add an ⓘ icon to the header that, when clicked, displays a tooltip with the stats. This keeps the stats but lets us get rid of the footer, and avoids cluttering the header.

I'd be on board with this. We might even be able to hit the stats api only when the tooltip is requested, as opposed to every time the page is hit.
