Invalid page visits being recorded, unwanted talk page being created
Closed, DeclinedPublicBUG REPORT

Description

This is not the first time this issue has occurred, but this latest instance makes it clear that it is a global Wiki issue that needs to be addressed. Using the most recent instance as an example, I have never visited the Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia, as I can't read Arabic script. A user with sysop privileges there insists that I have, which is complete nonsense. It has been suggested as an alternate explanation that I had edited a page on the English Wikipedia which contains a link back to the Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia site. Thus, a talk page was created there for me without my permission.

Thus, there is a bug in the global Wiki system in which a user having never visited a particular Wikipedia language site, will be recorded as having done so even though they haven't. I am aware that others have complained about pages being created without the users ever having visited that language site. Sometimes a global SYSOP will revert the page creation, but this doesn't resolve the underlying issue.

5 Key points:

  • English editors who never visit other language Wikipedias, are recorded as having done so.
  • Unwanted pages are created for said editors at the other language Wikipedias.
  • No preference system is in place for the user to block unwanted page creation, nor link back to their home Wikipedia talk page without editing the unwanted Wikipedia talk page (and thus creating a presence there).
  • Users who edit another language Wikipedia have a presence there, but may still not want a talk page there if they cannot read the language.
  • An automatic redirect to their primary Wiki talk page should be considered as a possible default option.

I understand that this is an unfortunate result of the various Wiki logins becoming globalized. While I would agree that it offers users some protection against multiple users having the same account name, it has also created annoyance for editors, as outlined above. ~~~~

On a side-note, this Phabricator "preview" doesn't appear to recognize four tilde marks (standard Wiki markup) as a signature with date and time stamp. As someone who almost never needs to visit the Phabricator, it is unclear how I should sign my reports, and I'm probably doing it wrong.

Event Timeline

You don't need to sign your reports, they're automatically attributed to you.

What actually happened on the Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia was that an edit you made was imported from the English Wikipedia, which auto-created your account. See also T201477, which would make this more clear.

Yes, page importing vs visitation sounds like a logical explanation for the contradiction. Thank you for linking these bug reports together, @Pppery; very much appreciated. :)

Your talk page was created by a user who sent a welcome message. Best practices for welcome messages differ from wiki to wiki; on the English Wikipedia, messages are usually not sent for accounts without edits, but I’m not sure of the policy that arzwiki has. In general, though, I think that blocking creation of talk pages is not worthwhile; communication is often necessary. In terms of redirecting talk pages, this can be partially achieved through creating a global user page https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_user_pages and indicating your home wiki.

And now that I think about it, I think that auto redirecting talk pages probably isn’t a worthwhile endeavour. Even if users have no edits on a wiki, they might ask questions off-wiki and others might be, for example, demonstrating talk pages by posting on theirs.

Thank you for the very good recommendation, @Frostly. I had thought about setting up a global page previously, but moved it to the back-burner, and over time forgot about it. I already have soft interwiki redirects setup, but they're on user pages rather than talk pages.

Interestingly, a similar dilemma previously occurred in which a hif.wikipedia user talk page was created for me without my permission (it was believed that I had visited it while logged-in, though making no edits/comments). What makes that interesting, is that an appropriate translator for Fiji Hindi didn't exist at that time (I don't know if that has since changed). How would I respond to a question or comment in a language that I can't even translate? (chuckle)

Note: some wikis have user talk pages auto created by NewUserMessages extension even if user is auto-created and hifwiki is one, see wmgNewUserMessageOnAutoCreate in https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/InitialiseSettings.php.txt. See also T314549: Option to welcome users on their first edits
