Outreachy Project: Build a data visualization tool for the evolution of Wikipedia articles maintained by WikiProjects
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

IMPORTANT: Make sure to read the Outreachy participant instructions and communication guidelines thoroughly before commenting on this task. This space is for project-specific questions, so avoid asking questions about getting started, setting up Gerrit, etc. When in doubt, ask your question on Zulip first!

Brief summary

Some Wikipedia editors work as a team through WikiProjects to monitor and improve the quality of articles in specific topic areas. How could anyone explore the expansion and quality improvement of WikiProjects related articles over time to assess the impact of this community effort?

Article quality is usually measured by editors using wiki-specific criteria. As keeping these assessments complete and up-to-date is largely impossible given the ever-changing nature of Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Foundation’s Research team has developed a model to predict the quality of Wikipedia articles. The model is based on language-agnostic features: page length, number of references, number of sections, number of wikilinks, number of media files, and number of categories. Using this model, a dataset with feature values and predicted quality scores for all revisions of all articles in more than 300 language editions of Wikipedia has just been published. Thus, this dataset provides key information on the expansion and quality of Wikipedia articles over time. In this project we will build on this novel data asset to develop a visualization tool that will allow anyone to explore the evolution of quality in articles maintained by WikiProjects.

Specifically, the work will the following phases:

  • Becoming familiar with the dataset, i.e. how to pre-process the data, what is the data structure, what other features could be added (e.g. pageviews), etc.
  • Selection of specific Wikiprojects of interest
  • Analysis and visualization of language-agnostic features of revisions of articles from Wikiprojects (over time)
  • Build an interactive web interface for users to explore the data visualizations

Skills required

  • Python for data analysis, modeling and visualization
  • HTML/CSS/JS and general design
  • Jupyter notebooks for documentation (nice to have but willingness to learn is sufficient)

Hi @Pablo @Isaac @CMyrick-WMF
I hope you're all doing well. I've been working on the microtask T358095 and I'm now at the stage where I need to submit my work for review. Could you please let me know where I can submit my work for review?

Just to provide some context, here's an overview of the work I've done:

  1. Extracted page view counts for Wikipedia articles.
  2. Explored and visualized the evolution of individual articles and a sample of Climate change articles by visualizing feature values and quality scores over time.
  3. Analyzed the distribution of quality scores by year using boxplots.

I'm looking forward to receiving feedback on my work.

Thank you!

Hello ,

Of course, I'd be happy to help!

Firstly, could you please provide me with more details about the data you've extracted? And the challenges you are facing.
It would be helpful to know which specific features or metrics you're looking to visualize.

Once I have a better understanding of what challenges are facing you exactly, I can suggest something better.
Feel free to ask any questions along the way, and I'll do my best to help you!

Thankyou!

To gather pageviews count for each revision timestamp, use the API https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/. Specify the desired time period and granularity (e.g., daily) in the API request to retrieve the pageviews data for analysis.

You may want to use the mviews library: https://github.com/mediawiki-utilities/python-mwviews as it is a good wrapper around the Wikimedia API with some benefits like this, straight from the docs:

When querying for multiple articles and multiple projects the client uses ThreadPoolExecutor to parallelize. You can set the level of parallelism when you instantiate the client like p = PageviewsClient(10).

Hi @Pablo @Isaac @CMyrick-WMF , can you please help with how to get started with the tasks on the project. Thanks

Hi @Ismail-omowunmi , you can start by solving the TODOS given in the microtask T358095. Use this notebook as a starting point and create your own notebook and complete the functions / analyses i.e., the TODOS given.

Good morning everyone, please I want to know if there's another way to download the data set am still finding it difficult to do for TODO Task And after that what other task are we expected to do?

Please your response will be highly appreciated

@Ismail-omowunmi Does it mean that I don't have to download the dataset on zenodo? Should i just use the link to import dataset as contained in the notebook? I also don't understand how to use the pageview for the API can you put me through am confused

Good morning everyone, please I want to know if there's another way to download the data set am still finding it difficult to do for TODO Task And after that what other task are we expected to do?

Hey @PromzyBA, I do not think we need to download any dataset. We've already been provided a sample to work with. Just run the cell with df_revisions and work with that.

@Udonels Thank you I have been clarified on that one.

@Udonels Please I have created generated my PAWS url, the problem I am facing now is that I tried to upload it but it gives error no such directory when I want to create a file. May be there is something I am not getting right, can you guide?

Hi @Pablo @Isaac @CMyrick-WMF , I have sent my TODO Task to your mails for review.

Hey, @PromzyBA, you are required to download this notebook - https://public-paws.wmcloud.org/User:Pablo%20(WMF)/outreachy/round28/Microtask.ipynb in raw format in your local computer, and save it with .ipynb extension. After this, you can upload this file to your PAWS notebook and start editing it.

Hi @Pablo, @Isaac, @CMyrick-WMF, I hope you are all doing well. I've sent the link to my task to your emails. Could you please review it and let me know if any changes or additions are needed or if I'm doing everything correctly? I would appreciate your feedbacks.

please @Pablo @Isaac @CMyrick-WMF, I am done with my mini-task for the data visualizations using the notebook, can anyone please explain to me what I am expected to do?

Hello, @Pablo @Isaac @CMyrick-WMF Can you all please tell me about the categorization of Wikiprojects: Active, Defunct, Inactive, Semi-active, Uncategorized in detail? Which types of projects are good for performing data visualization and analysis?

@Ansha_Pashine: the dataset we have provided for this task only contains articles maintained by WikiProject Climate change, so there is no need to explore other Wikiprojects at this time.

Is there any additional information we need to provide?

Hey! We can record the contribution till April 2 right?

Please do read and follow the red box at the top of this page where [not] to ask questions - thanks.

Can anyone tell what date we need to put in the record contribution section "Date contribution was accepted or merged:"?

@Pablo @CMyrick-WMF @Isaac

Can we add docs link in the project timeline section in our final application or we have to describe everything there only in the provided space?

please what link are we to submit for the contribution since the project doesn't have a Github repository?

I have both the netlify link and a github link I dot know which one to submit

Message from the project mentors about the evaluation process

First of all, @CMyrick-WMF @Isaac and I would like to thank all applicants for their interest in our project proposal. We were overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of the submissions we received. We are impressed by your skills and are convinced that you will be able to develop high-impact careers. As some have contacted us to learn more about our evaluation process, we have decided to share that information publicly here. The criteria were as follows:

  • Quality of code
  • Quality of notebook
  • Creativity
  • Communication skills
  • Iteration over feedback

Each proposal was reviewed by at least one mentor and then each mentor proposed multiple candidates based on their subjective evaluation using these criteria. After deliberation among the three mentors, a final candidate was chosen.

We are convinced that many candidates could have successfully completed the Outreachy intership with us, but unfortunately we could only choose one. Therefore, not being selected should never be understood as a failure, we emphasize that we were amazed by the quality of the submissions received and the overall enthusiasm of applicants.

Thank you all and best of luck!

Thank you, @Pablo, for providing this information. This project really improved my data analysis skills, especially with the valuable feedback from @CMyrick-WMF . It has helped me dive deeper into our visualization approaches. I sincerely appreciate all the mentors for assigning us such an amazing task that has enhanced our data analysis skills. Please let me know if there are any other opportunities available where I can contribute. I would love to work on any project within Wikimedia again. Thank you.

Message from the project mentors about additional opportunities

A number of you have asked about additional opportunities to do technical work related to the Wikimedia projects. Here are a few places you might look if you're curious:

  • (Online) Wikimedia Developer Portal for new developers: Within this portal, you can find different projects where you can contribute to Wikimedia open-source, and also meet and connect with the Wikimedia technical community, and find opportunities for support and learning.
  • (In-person) You can also search for a local group of Wikimedians who you can connect with in-person and that might have more specific advice and needs that you could support. Even folks focused on editing Wikipedia often have needs related to building bots to assist in that work or gathering data. There might be a chapter in your country, or a more informal user group. You might also check the events list as well to see if you notice any events close to you.
