Background:

We received the request to add edit summaries to Article description tasks on iOS.

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where): When editing or adding short descriptions/article descriptions on the Wikipedia-iOS-App-Backlog there is no option to leave an edit summary and it does not provide an automated summary. Either would be nice.

Use case(s) (list the steps that you performed to discover that problem, and describe the actual underlying problem which you want to solve. Do not describe only a solution): On a Wikipedia article clicking the pen to edit, selecting “Edit article description”, making the edit, and selecting “Publish description.” There is no option to leave an edit summary and the automated summary just leaves a minor edit tag.

Benefits (why should this be implemented?): Either an automated summary (something like “article description” or “short description”) or the ability for me to enter my own summary before publishing would improve the information available to other editors.

Edits made through on Android through suggested edits Article Descriptions have the same behavior on en.wiki, where they do not prompt an edit summary from the user, and no edit summary is autopopulated. Edits from this feature currently show up as #suggestededit-add-desc1.0 on en.wiki. We want to ensure edits from our suggested edits tools are readable by all editors, with a descriptive edit summary.

Why en.wiki only?

• For enwiki, we use {{short description}} and insert it to the top of the article.
• For all others, we post the article description to wikidata with a article's language code so items can match the article itself. Example edit summary: Added [de] description: Fuẞballstadion in Frankreich, #suggestededit-add-desc-1.0

Requirements:

• Edit summary "Added short description" is automatically included for edits made through Android Article descriptions suggested edits on en.wiki
• Edit summary "Updated short description" is automatically included for edits that update the existing article description on en.wiki
• Parity with iOS (https://github.com/wikimedia/wikipedia-ios/pull/4745)
• Automatic edit summary strings should be added into Translate.wiki
