Add soundcloud.com to $wgCopyUploadsDomains at Commons
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

Good afternoon. We are a GLAM in the Netherlands and a partner organization of Wikimedia NL. Can you please add Soundcloud to the Wikimedia Commons domain whitelist that we can use the GWToolset now? We would like to use Soundcloud to upload about 200 radio broadcasts from WWII.

soundcloud.com

We are also involved in other uploads using the GWtoolset through our platform for video (openimages.eu), for instance this category: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Media_from_Open_Beelden. Unforunately Open Images is not compatible with these sound files.

Thank you very much for your great help.

Best regards,
Jesse de Vos
Project coordinator at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision.

OK.. This is getting a bit silly now. Why do we bother with a whitelist if we're going to whitelist half of the web?

Would you have any subdomains or part of the URL path on soundcloud.com to cut down / limit the scope a bit? Allowing anything and all on Soundcloud feels scary.

I appreciate Krenair's comment, but since flickr is also whitelisted (which is basically the other half of the web ;-) I figured...

But yes, we do have a more 'narrow' URL path. Which is:
https://soundcloud.com/beeldengeluid

If that could be whitelisted I'd be very grateful!
Best,
Jesse

But yes, we do have a more 'narrow' URL path. Which is:

Keep in mind you may not be able to download any audio streams with this url. It seems the url to fetch
.wav files is https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/*

Ah, mczusatz.
Then I would still appreciate if soundcloud could be whitelisted as a domain in its entirety. Much like flickr for images it can function as a portal between gwtoolset users and wikimedia commons for sound.
Of course as a user of the toolset ill make sure to consult the community before performing the actual upload.

Thanks for your consideration. Best,
Jesse

Dear all,

After some consideration we discovered that Soundcloud doesn't provide a link to the media file itself (also not from the API). It gives a temporary streaming link, the API is therefore not set up for uploads directly to Wikimedia Commons. We are now exploring other options. My apologies for taking up your time.

Best!
Jesse
