FWIW Verovio is written in C++ and has a very fast command-line interface. It can be compiled to JavaScript using emscripten, but if you just want an SVG of the score to display, you can run it server-side.

Yes, Lilypond does have similar problems. I personally wouldn't recommend it as a stable format either, but since it is already supported on MediaWiki I didn't see the point of arguing that it should be removed.
