When the tool https://panoviewer.toolforge.org/ is called, it freezes with the message "Fetching image..." and nothing else.

@Krinkle , regarding the significant improvement in the performance experience, I'm not saying anything, but regarding the improvement in the user experience I don't agree that it's a significant improvement for the user. Having to open a window, full screen, to consult a map; leaving the narrative or documentary context to place it on the map isn't an improvement, of any kind, in the user's experience. Of course, thi's just my opinion.

In eswiki, this option - direct interactive map, without static thumbnail and full screen requirement - is fully functional in edit-preview mode, being deactivated when saving the edit. In case it's useful or orients the resolution.

My idea of using the GPX format in Wikipedia is to provide the user the option to download the information that a certain map contains, a Way of St. James for example, for use on mobile devices, not to use that file, that format, in the development of maps. It would be to transform the Data:way.map, GeoJSON, without having to upload the same way.geojson file and having to explain what and how he has to do to get the GPX. Maybe an on-the-fly conversion, as Yurik says.

It's really necessary to use static thumbnail? Other WikiMedia projects, like Commons or Wikiviajes, do not use them. They load the interactive map directly.

I believe that simplifying geometry is not a solution. When we talk about geographical information, in my case water basins, we cannot give wrong information. The line runs along the crest of the mountains, not near or more or less.
Finally, if there is no solution, this good tool in its intention is frustrated. We will have to continue with OSM and Wikidata. Regards
