Just so people know, the problem has not been solved for OWID (Our World in Data) images. See: Phab:T344564. When I tried to upload the latest map (dated Sep 13, 2023 on the map) I was prevented from doing so.

I edit Help:Table and people ask about how to do row highlighting. The info was only relatively recently added to Help:Table. But it is rapidly being used by more and more tables. It would be a shame to lose this very useful function. It is difficult sometimes to follow a row of data across a wide table. Row highlighting on hover makes it much easier. And the white background of mw-datatable makes the light blue hover color stand out. And thus easier to follow across the row.

It is in 43 templates too. And the articles those templates are used in are NOT listed in the 334 results from the Izno search. I checked.

Thanks Jdlrobson for the Phabricator ticket. class=mw-datatable is used in a lot of tables. People like it for 2 reasons:
1: The row highlighting on hover.
2: The white background for non-header cells. It makes for more contrast especially when there are non-bolded links in the non-header cells. The blue links against the normal gray background of non-header cells are not very contrasting. Bolded blue links against the gray background of header cells are less of a problem, though I think the gray background of headers is too dark of a gray. class=mw-datatable is often used with class=wikitable and the gray header background of class=wikitable overrides the blue background of class=mw-datatable

Thanks, for the breakdown, matmarex. Whatever it was intended for originally, mw-datatable has long ago taken on a life of its own. Isn't that the case with a lot of code?

Hi @Aklapper. I rewrote the task. I hope it makes more sense. I used sections. I did not know it was possible to use sections. I guessed correctly that equal signs would do it. As an aside, I wish that only wikitext was used for editing in Phabricator.

Thanks! Header text now stays centered in both desktop and mobile view unless specifically changed per header cell. I checked in Firefox and Chrome.

Currently, the default header text alignment on both desktop and mobile is centered. That should remain.

The glorious implementation of Template:Static row numbers has finally allowed the easy addition of fixed, static row numbers as an integrated column on any table.

It has been pointed out to me that row alignment is off when viewed in mobile browsers. This is when using the previously mentioned {{Rank} template.

A much easier and better method for creating a static row number column exists. Sandbox 89 linked below uses the new method, and is updated as needed. The table in Sandbox 89 is taken from a version of "List of countries by incarceration rate".

I would like watchlists to be allowed in templates. A watchlist for English Wikipedia. A watchlist for Meta. A watchlist for Mediawiki.org

List of U.S. states by incarceration and correctional supervision rate is an example of a table that needs a fixed row number column. Because there are 3 separate columns that are important enough that people want to see them in rank order. That can't be done with an integrated rank order column. It can only be done with a fixed row number column.

I want room for a long descriptive title on one wide line. Not a long title spread out over several lines. I want to be able to scan a list of filter set titles. That can be done quickly if each filter set title is on one line. And if there is no need to hover to get the full description.

Very few people look at Tech News. Even fewer are going to scan it weekly in order to find the very few times it mentions table editing via the Visual Editor. Sometimes, the developers have to leave the cages it seems they are locked into by your groupthink.

I, and many others, do not use the Visual Editor much. So I did not hear of these various great improvements in table editing until now, years later. I do not understand how many of the improvements listed here actually work though.
