IMHO, different chinese variant pages shouldn't be treated as the same page. Right now we set canonical url to /wiki/ page for all chinese variants pages. This makes Google think that they are the same page so that Google only shows one kind of search result. But the reality is different variants should have different search result (title, description). A simplified chinese user should be able to see simplified page title in search results. A traditional chinese user should see the traditional ones.
IMHO, I think fixing the canonical url won't solve the issue. Removing the canonical url will.

If we set canonical url to /wiki, google search will think all chinese variants pages are the same, and there will always be only one search result. zh, zh-hk, zh-tw, zh-cn users will all see the same result title and description.
Hi folks, this has been staled for a while. Any chance we can push this forward a bit?
Even if Google honors the canonical urls, I don't think the search results will show what we want.
I think we shouldn't be setting canonical url to /wiki on chinese variants pages. The localized pages have their own title. Setting the canonical url to /wiki makes them all show the same title in google search results.
