Description

I do not see the VE Edit tab in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Sandbox nor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Sandbox

while I have it enabled (and I can see it) in mainspace.

Pretty sure this is intentional. You could probably start a discussion on the village pump about it, it's a matter of configuration.

I might not understand "Wikipedia space" correctly here.
So far I only see links to Sandboxes posted here? :)

Okay...please undo this. Contrary to what is suggested above, Wikipedia space is FULL of pages where people need to sign. Noticeboards, AfDs, checkuser pages...pretty much every page I've edited since this has been uploaded.

I really like VE in article space, and I've used it in my sandbox. I do not want to have to remove it from my preferences. But given that a lot of active editors and almost all administrators regularly edit in Wikipedia space on pages that require signature, this is going to have a negative impact on user acceptance. We've had years of training reinforcing that "edit" in this namespace means "wikitext" - but it is not acceptable to fail to sign the majority of pages that exist in Wikipedia space, and it's impossible to do that with VE.

It looks like 41% of the pages in the Wikipedia: namespace at en.wp are AFDs. Of course, 98% of those won't be open for editing on any given day, but it's a lot of pages.

Either disable, or at least make it conditional on the presence of NEWSECTIONLINK ?

I wrote a gadget some time ago to make it possible to insert signatures in VisualEditor: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Matma_Rex/visualeditor-signature.js. I try to keep it from breaking too badly, especially if you let me know it broke.

@Jdforrester-WMF have VE features developed enough that enabling this will be ok now? I know you can now sign in VE.

The reason I want this to happen is I'm working on Wikiproject COVID-19 trying to collate information from UN agencies and this is very very difficult without tables and having VE enabled would make this much much easier (I know you can copy and paste stuff from other namespaces where VE is enabled but this is really horrible for usability especially for new users).

Having tables easily editable in Wikiprojects in general would be really helpful for collaboration.

Denying one group a feature because another group don't want it doesn't feel like a very equitable solution if there is a technical fix.

Hi @Mrjohncummings. For configuration change, local consensus is required according to 'Requesting wiki configuration changes'.
Could you bring up the matter on the Village pump page of your wiki (or any other appropriate place) to confirm that this change is wanted by the community, and paste the link to that discussion here?

For more information about how to request these kinds of changes, please see 'Requesting wiki configuration changes' and feel free to forward that link to others who may want similar changes made in the future. Thanks!

Hi @RhinosF1 thanks very much, yes I'm happy to bring it up as a discussion, but I want to have up to date information, otherwise people can't make an informed decision. The main questions I have at the moment are:

  1. Is it possible to sign your name in VE?
  2. Is signing your name in VE a feature that can be turned on/off per namespace?
  3. Is there a piece of wikicode you can add to a page to turn off VE on that page if you really don't want VE to work on that page?

Thanks
