Weird symbols shown when writing text on Commons (due to a different input method accidentally selected in ULS)
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

Good afternoon,

I must say that I found out that there are several issues on Wikimedia Commons. While adding some character and trying to add symbol (=, +), some weird IPA symbols appear sometimes, instead of what I want. I'll show it: ʍ instead of w=, ə/e=, ɹ/r=, θ/t=, ʒ/z=, ɯ/u=, ɪ/i=, ɒ/o=, ʘ/p=, ɑ/a=, ʃ/s=, ð/d=, ɸ/f=, ɣ/g=, ɥ/h=, ɟ/j=, ɬ/l=, ʏ/y=, χ/x=, ç/c=, ʋ/v=, β/b=, ɲ/n=, ʡ/Q=, ɘ/E=, ʀ/R=, ʉ/U=, ɨ/I=,ɵ/O=, ɢ/G=, ʜ/H=, ʟ/L=, ʙ/B=, ɴ/N=, ̟/+, ̝/++, ̘/+++ etc. (more += more weird signs, also errored when combined with letters). It only doesn't happen to q, k, m, W, T, Z, P, A, S, D, F, J, K, Y, X, C, V, M. Thanks for fixing.

I will try to describe it more cleverly: When you type some certain characters (=, +, :), the result what you get is really weird, because there are several bugs: when you combine = with some letter, the letter will change into some IPA symbol, if you write +, you will get ̟, (this will change and then multiply while adding more +, combinable with ALL possible characters), if you write :, you will get ː, or ˑ, when multiplied. It is not a bug of keyboard, because it doesn't happen on any other wiki. I'm reporting it, because it worses and makes uncomfortable writing on Commons. I also took a screenshot, see there: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%CC%9FC%CB%90%C9%92mm%CC%9Do%C9%B2s_%CC%B9%CC%B9%CC%9FError.png

Hi @Awewewe, thanks for taking the time to report this!
Unfortunately this report lacks some information. If you have time and can still reproduce the problem: Please add a more complete description to this report (a list of steps to reproduce which leave no room for interpretation what to do, describing actual results and expected results after performing the steps to reproduce, attaching or linking to a public testcase, browser information, MediaWiki version information, etc). You can edit the task description by clicking Edit Task.
Ideally, exact and clear steps to reproduce should allow any other person to follow these steps (without having to interpret those steps) and see the same results. Problems that others can reliably reproduce can get fixed faster. Thanks!

We don't know where you type. Please see and follow https://mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug and provide a list of steps, step by step. Thanks.

It happens everywhere: While uploading a file, while editing file description, even while searching. It happens in all skins except for MinervaNeue.

  • Does this also happen when you are not logged in? You could use a "private window" in your web browser to find out.
  • Does this also happen when you are logged in and in [[ https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Locating_broken_scripts | safemode ]]?
  • Which web browser do you use? Does this also happen when you use another web browser (which one)?
  • Which operating system is being used?
  • No, it happens only, when you are logged in. While not logged in, it types normally.
  • Yes, it does.
  • I use Google Chrome. Then I used Internet Explorer, where the issue also happens.
  • I use Windows 10.

Thanks, that info was helpful. At the top of the website, please click the language name, then in the window click the "Input Settings" link, and reset it to "Use Native keyboard". For more information, see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:UniversalLanguageSelector/Input_methods

Closing this task as invalid as there is no bug in the code of the software but as the user needs to change some personal settings in their preferences.
