Request for 'product-analytics' project on Cloud VPS
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

My team doesn't have big tasks which require multiple VMs but rather occasional tasks which require VMs (or multiple simultaneous tasks each requiring a single VM), so please understand that I'm not requesting a task-specific project but an ongoing team-specific project on Cloud VPS due to the nature of our work.

In fact, that's the point of a patch like https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/operations/puppet/+/458907/, which allows us to create a VM, configure it easily for the specific task (e.g. machine learning, deep learning, Bayesian statistics, time series analysis/forecasting), and then destroy it when the project is done. We can do some of our analysis work on stat100* machines and in SWAP, but we'd also like an option to isolate certain analyses into their own temporary VMs if needed.

An 8 VCPU / 16GB RAM project would cover our needs, please and thank you :)

mpopov moved this task from Triage to Tracking on the Product-Analytics board.

Moving to discussion needed but this is looking like an obvious decline to me due to being team-scoped.

Hello @mpopov! We generally don't approve projects that scoped to groups of people; we prefer projects that are scoped to activities. So, I encourage you to to open a different request (or requests) for particular tasks, specifying the specific thing or things you'd like to do in each project.

Projects that are assigned to owners but not to particular work tend to cause us lots of maintenance headaches (especially if they're scoped to project teams since teams tend to change membership over time).

If it turns out that you're genuinely changing course every week or two and wind up bottelnecked by the approval process then we can revisit.
