Autogenerated template "edit" links
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Every template should have its own autogenerated "edit" link, as sections do.
This could be implemented via a prefs option that is turned off by default.

Editors should not need to know the details of how Mediawiki URL-encodes
templates, in order to create or edit them. In particular, it should be
possible to transparently change the way these are encoded, without affecting
normal editing behavior. Creation is already transparent -- an editor simply
enters {{templatename}}, previews or saves the edit, and follows the red link;
this enhancement request provides for transparent editing.

For usability an excellent proposal. But: many templates are just for navigation
tables, bars etc. I fear there will be no good default place for such a link
that doesn't break one or the other template. If such a thing be added it should
be possible to manually direct the placement, for example by inserting EDIT
at the place where the link should be.

For the moment there's a workaround with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Ed

I think this bug should be marked WONTFIX rather than DUPLICATE, since bug 143
is a different approach to the same issue, it doesn't implement the actual issue
at hand. Indeed, there is no reason why both couldn't be implemented were we to
want to.

This allows any future requests for the same thing to be marked as dupes,
referring their submitters to discussion of the issue here.

(note that Brion had previously resolved bug 607 as WONTFIX anyway)
