Under the current set of defaults, when a category page is displayed, the pages are displayed in one section, and any media is displayed in another section as a gallery. Using NOGALLERY, both pages and media can be displayed in one section.
I would like a SEPGALLERY option that keeps the pages in one section, but displays media in another section in the style that pages are displayed (keeping the current File: prefix)

Yes, that's what I want. As you say, if you don't use NOGALLERY, the media shows up in the another section, but with thumbnails. I'd like it to be displayed like NOGALLERY does, but with the media in a separate section.
As I read your description, I believe you're describing the feature I'd like.

accidentally fixed in r80432 (for practical reasons of doing it the way we were before is very difficult with the new categorylinks schema)
