Set MediaWiki:Mainpage instead of a more expensive #REDIRECT on 25 Wikimedia wikis
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

25 non-closed Wikimedia wikis have main pages whose content is merely a MediaWiki #REDIRECT.

(For the records, those mainpage page names are in sync with the mainpage value defined in MediaWiki Core's ./languages/i18n/qqx.json.)

Instead of a MediaWiki #REDIRECT as main page content, it would be better to edit/create the page MediaWiki:Mainpage and define the custom page name of the main page.
Example: If the page content is #REDIRECT [[Real Main PageName]], then the content of the page MediaWiki:Mainpage should be Real Main PageName

Readers will save a few milliseconds by one redirect less (you can check via curl -Ls -o /dev/null -w %{url_effective}).
It will also remove that unneeded/confusing subtitle line "Redirect from..." when visiting the main page.

Work is currently being done by global sysops (including @WikiBayer and myself).

in rw/st Wiktionary the Main Page should instead be moved to the localized name.

The two wikis Bugreporter pointed out appear to be the only two left to do. Both have no admins and no active community. I would disagree with Bugreporter, and say that in cases like this Global Sysops should do the minimum necessary maintenance, and let the community decide whether to move the main page and to where if one later forms, but I don't really care.
