Extend the function of the wikimedia link-shortener
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Wikimedia has the url-shorteneer w.wiki that creates shorturls of the format w.wiki/xXxX_1xW.

I request to add shortlinks of the format w.wiki/en/w/Article

As the current shortener does not use "/" (slash) in shorturls there will be no conflict with current or future shorturls.

The new format would consist of a language code, the project code and a page name.

An alternative way could be w.en.w.wiki/Article

What is the benefit?

Links to pages on WMF sites are often made at social media sites. Social media sites (including Twitter and Mastodon) only show the first characters of an URL to the user. In case of WMF this more often than not looks like: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean...

With the new shortlink format it becomes much more likely, that the user of a social media app can actually see where the url links to: w.en.w.wiki/Useful_Nam... or w.wiki/en/w/Useful_nam...

Multi-lingual projects could skip the language code: Commons: w.wiki/c/File:Useful_File_... Wikisource: w.wiki/s/Useful_sourcetex...

There could also be "vanity" codes: "Wiki loves Monuments" project: w.wiki/v/WLM2023 Wikimania: w.wiki/v/WikiMania23

Also possible: Shortcodes for name spaces: w.wiki/c/f/Protrait_Foto_of_N...

And finally linking to curid for persistent links: w.wiki/en/w/id/1234567890 or wikidata properties: w.wiki/d/P/1234567890
