Automatically convert DOIs expressed as doi.org web urls to proper DOIs
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where):
Currently when you use the Cite tool in VE on Wikipedia to create a reference using a url from doi.org the cite tool renders it as a generic website reference. It would be much much more useful if the cite tool would transform the url into the actual DOI e.g

doi.org/10.4060/cc7937en gives a generic website reference

doi:10.4060/cc7937en gives a high quality DOI reference.

Currently I don't think there is any documentation around this and this would be an easy way of getting much higher quality references. Even if additional documentation was created existing and new users would likely not know about it because it is quite a technical thing.

Use case(s) (list the steps that you performed to discover that problem, and describe the actual underlying problem which you want to solve. Do not describe only a solution):

Anyone using a doi.org url in the Cite tool in VE should be able to enter the URL and it automatically be converted into the actual DOI.

Benefits (why should this be implemented?):
Much higher quality references with no additional technical and easy to miss documentation.
