Abuse Filter, Special:CreateLocalAccount and type of created accounts
Closed, DuplicatePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary :
Account creation encompasses the actions of either "createaccount" or "autocreateaccount".

When an account is created via Special:CreateLocalAccount, Abuse Filter categorizes it as an "autocreateaccount".

Additional variables may include:

  • Was the account created by an anonymous user? (True/False)
  • Was the account create by a global account? (True/False)
  • Was the account created via Special:CreateLocalAccount? (True/False)
  • Who is the creator of this account? (Strings, restricted view-only such as OS/CU/AF ...)

Use case(s):
The French Wikipedia has a policy to prevent the creation of false bot accounts. In summary, bot accounts should only be created by Wikimedians with at least 500 global contributions or trusted individuals such as administrators, autopatrolled users, stewards, etc.
An attempt was made to create the account 'Portrait-bot', triggering Spécial:Filtre_antiabus/375.

In this scenario, an administrator should have the ability to locally force the creation using Special:CreateLocalAccount without triggering the filter. However, such an action (log) does not provide any information to exempt administrators.

To circumvent this issue, one must disable the filter (Log) and then utilize Special:CreateLocalAccount.

Benefits (why should this be implemented?):

  • Enhanced Control: Implementing this feature provides administrators with greater control over account creation processes, allowing them to bypass filters when necessary without compromising security measures.
  • Improved User Experience: By enabling administrators to force local account creation without triggering filters, the user experience for legitimate users, such as trusted bot creators or administrators, is enhanced, as they can seamlessly create accounts without unnecessary hurdles.
  • Mitigation of False Positives: This feature helps mitigate false positives triggered by automated filters, ensuring that legitimate account creation actions are not erroneously flagged and disrupted.
  • Adherence to Policy: Facilitating the creation of bot accounts by authorized users in compliance with the French Wikipedia policy ensures that the platform maintains its standards for account creation while preventing the proliferation of unauthorized bot accounts.
  • Streamlined Workflow: With the ability to exempt administrators from filter triggers when using Special:CreateLocalAccount, the workflow for managing account creation processes becomes more efficient, allowing administrators and abuse filters to focus on other important tasks.
  • Maintaining Security Measures: While providing flexibility in account creation, this feature also maintains the integrity of the abuse filter system by allowing trusted users to selectively bypass filters only when necessary, thus upholding security measures on the platform.
