Wikidata gadget request – reference reordering
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where):

On Wikidata, the ability to rearrange references, similar to the functionality already available for statements/property values per Preferences>Gadgets>Rearrange Values ("This gadget adds a button for reordering the values of a property, if the property has more than one value").

Use case(s) (list the steps that you performed to discover that problem, and describe the actual underlying problem which you want to solve. Do not describe only a solution):

For wikidata taxon items, the most important reference with the original species (etc) description should come first; for example, https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q232768 (Great Hornbill (Buceros bicornis)), taxon name (Property=(P)225), the key reference (with link), to Linnaeus 1758 and the original species description, is reference number 27 out of 27 (with more references to follow with annual checklist updates etc). It would be more helpful to have this as reference number 1 out of 27.

Benefits (why should this be implemented?):

Without this functionality, the key reference is lost amongst the plenitude, a deterrent to the expenditure of effort by users in adding these key references, and also a barrier to reference by users to such. This need has also been identified by others, eg: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Wikidata_talk%3AWikiProject_Taxonomy&diff=1964101920&oldid=1964099774
