In the Wikipedia app, enable seeing more than 1 set of recommended articles
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where):
In the Wikipedia app there in the Explore feed (the home page) there is just 1 tile for recommended articles and it shows only 1 set of (5) articles. It is based on just 1 article recently read and doesn't even get refreshed when opening up the app another time so often you get the exact same recommendations.

Basically you have implemented a great feature that makes the app exciting but managed to limit its adoption to make it as boring as possible instead of harnessing the readily available feature to make the app more interesting.

Not only are many users probably interested in seeing further recommendations, because it only uses one base article as a starting point and shows just 5 articles, the chances of the base article not being a particularly well-picked one are large.

Please at the bottom of the five articles show a button to show recommendations for another article recently read, e.g. "Show other recommendations". There could be a second button for showing more than 5 articles for the current base article and these functions could also be made available in the context menu when taping on the three dots at the top right of the tile.

The recommendations work well and could possibly be improved or extended to more than 5 articles with this tool and as described in this issue (may also apply to the software the recs are currently using).

I think it would also be very useful if it was possible to show recommendations based not just on 1 article recently read but sets of articles recently read and for logged-in editors, sets of articles edited a lot (large number of bytes changed or large number of edits). This could also be made available via this tile as well as an additional one. That would however be a separate issue.

It could also be a good idea to enable having multiple tiles for article recommendations in the app Explore feed so you can just scroll (swipe) down to see further recs instead of having to press some 'show more/other' button. There could also be a config for these tiles (available via the three dot context menu) so you can configure the number of base articles and number of recs per base article of this tile.

I think at every app open the tile should show fresh recommendations, it wouldn't be a big problem if at fifth app open it shows the same recs as in first app open (e.g. 12341567) but not if it's like 111111222211. That's probably also a separate issue.

Use case(s) (list the steps that you performed to discover that problem, and describe the actual underlying problem which you want to solve. Do not describe only a solution):

Finding more interesting articles. Exploring Wikipedia. Using the Wikipedia app and finding it interesting, useful, exciting, engaging.

Benefits (why should this be implemented?):

Makes Wikipedia articles get read. Makes people actually use the Wikipedia and keep having it installed, enjoy its use, and become more likely to contribute to Wikipedia by consuming more of its content and discovering more relevant articles.

There are other issues and research about how to make Wikipedia including its app more engaging and the Future Audiences project – I suggest that as a first step one takes advantage of readily available features. Another issue about making the Wikipedia app more engaging & used more is T377072
