Hi! I want to make it crystal clear my issue occurs with the mambowiki component.
I've done due diligence discussing this issue with the Mambo community:

as documented in the above referenced thread, I have *no* issues with my initial
development install - I only begin to have login issues after relocating my
joomla! files and database to a different apache/mySQL instance.
Steps to Reproduce: Minimized, easy-to-follow steps that will trigger the
bug. Include any special setup steps.
- install MAMP, Joomla!, and mambowiki
- recusively copy root directory from /Applications/MAMP/htdocs to
/Library/WebServer/Documents
- export and import database from MAMP install to Fink mysql install
- log in as valid user
- open mambowiki component
Actual Results: What the application did after performing the above steps.
Login Required - You must login to view other pages.
Expected Results: What the application should have done, were the bug not
present.
