Renaming scheme for labs servers
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Not all of these will become reality right away, but I'll move towards the new naming scheme as I re-image, and include notes in site.pp in the meantime.

We're historically inconsistent with 'lab' vs. 'labs' but going forward let's standardize on 'lab'.

Current names -> proposed names

labs-support vlan

labsdb10xx -> (no change)
labstore10xx -> (no change)
labmon1001 -> (no change)

labs-private vlan

labnet1001 -> (no change)
virt10xx -> labvirt10xx

public vlan

virt1000 -> labcontrol1001

holmium (alias labs-ns2) -> labdns1001
californium (alias horizon) -> labdash1001
silver (alias wikitech) -> wikitech

Just commenting to say all of this makes sense :)

Wasn't the plan to rename labsdb to labdb to match the standard of the other hostnames?

Also the plan was to rename all virt to lab, right?

Rob -- I don't mess with the labsdb boxes much. I'd be happy for them to be renamed but it may not be worth the trouble.

And, yes, as per... the entire text of this ticket, virt* will become lab<something>*

renaming labsdb should be done very carefully, since user code still
relies on it being called labsdb*, and there’s also a few hundred
unpuppetized /etc/hosts files running around. we could ‘fix’ it by
having DNS aliases, but ‘eh'

This was all done anyway, so it's ok :)
