I upgraded to 1.8 stable from 1.6, now some, but not all pages, load blank.

Check that you have installed the <ref> extension properly. I tried adding
<references/> to that second (working) page and it failed. Ruthlessly stripping out
<ref>…</ref> and <references/> from the first page seems to make it work.
