rough notes:
needs:
- define SOPs that get all the way to workable tasks to be handled by existing SOPs
- retain links from quarterly goals to individual tasks
Approach A: Explode it early
- break the Epic into Stories and eliminate the Epic
- when? At triage? as part of grooming, prior to triage?
- this approach makes it impossible to track the Epic once it's broken. do we need that?
Approach B: Tootsie Roll approach (keep taking licks at it)
1. have a separate column for Epics
2. In the triage meeting,
Option A. assign Epic to somebody. When they start work on it, the first thing they do is make a new, reasonably sized task for it (e.g., they do basic work breakdown) and assign the Epic back
- do this using the "subtask" shortcut, which has the effect of making a new task and marking it as blocking the Epic
- start working on that task
Option B. assign a placeholder task to somebody and leave the Epic
Option C. do work breakdown on that starter tasks in the triage meeting, and assign it, and leave the Epic
3. At the next triage meeting, check the Epic and see
- if it has no open tasks related to it, see if it's Done. if not, continue:
- (if it's not done, whether or not it has any open tasks) : does it need more work breakdown. If so, use option A, B, or C
