@thcipriani informed me that you can track a submodule branch in .gitmodules and it will auto-create merge commits when that branch is updated. See also: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1777854/git-submodules-specify-a-branch-tag Could definitely save us some keystrokes on deploy.
