Track transcoding-related tasks
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

There are a number of transcoding-related tasks, for example: T22252. The usual idea is that for certain file types, we need to ingest them and immediately convert them to avoid issues. I think it would be nice to be able to track tasks related to multimedia transcoding.

I'm not sure whether a tracking task or a #Multimedia-Transcode Phabricator Maniphest tag/project makes sense, so I'm filing this task for consideration.

I think I'd first like to see input from Multimedia folks working on such issues and whether they'd also consider such a tag useful to find tasks and organize their work.

Also, somebody needs to commit to add the proposed project to existing and incoming new tasks. Pointing out the obvious here. :)

Setting status to Stalled as this requires input from Multimedia.

MarkTraceur moved this task from Untriaged to Tracking on the Multimedia board.
MarkTraceur subscribed.

This might be useful. The Multimedia team proper doesn't really do anything on this front, so at the very least, we shouldn't be blocking this task. I support the more specific tag to take things out of our workflow that we don't have much input on.

(sorry for the lag, @MZMcBride)

Any proposal on the name and the description of this project?
Do we have any page to link to, explaining "transcoding" functionality on Wikimedia servers?

The task description mentions #Multimedia-Transcode. Is this name acceptable? Description can be "Tasks related to transcoding multimedia" or similar.

What documentation/links do you need? We have https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcoding to explain the general concept.

We currently have TimedMediaHandler and TimedMediaHandler-Transcode tracking transcode-related tickets of TMH, which is currently the only extension that does audio/video transcodes on WMF servers AFAIK.

Do you imply that this area is already sufficiently covered by TimedMediaHandler-Transcode ? If not, what would be the relationship between the new project and TimedMediaHandler-Transcode ?

I'm not sure. What is the scope of this new project?

  • TMH's transcode is only the transcode of the already uploaded files into other formats/sizes for TMH's player to display. Operational issues regarding transcodes on Wikimedia, such as T157028: Many transcodes still fail are already handled in that project.
  • Regarding tickets such as T16373, T22252, they are talking about transcode-on-upload (to support currently unsupported formats), which is currently an out-of-scope for TMH, nor supported by MediaWiki core at all. FWIW, there was a proposal on Commons regarding doing the same for MP4, but was not favored at the time of discussion in 2014. IMHO, I don't think it make sense to create a new phab project just to track transcode-on-upload tickets unless it is implemented in MediaWiki core or extension, or if someone is willing to work on it. (T157319 may be related, though)

In any case, @brion is currently the go-to person regarding transcodes AFAIK. Input welcome :)

Setting task status to stalled. After information has been provided, please set the status back to "Open" via the Add Action...Change Status dropdown. Thanks!

I'm going to go ahead and decline this as TimedMediaHandler-Transcode has existed for a while.
