Description

For her art class, Michelle is analysing "Las Meninas". She adds some missing annotations. Some to explain some technical painting details, others to explain the subjects appearing in the painting, others to do both.

Sometimes a part of the image can be annotated in different ways. In some cases a Wikidata annotation suffices, but in others more is required.

  • Single annotations with more information vs Multiple annotations with different information

Hypotheses

  • This isn't a common use-case, and thus some added steps wont cause friction.

Event Timeline

I really like the combination idea. I think eventually we'll need to have multiple "layers" of annotations anyway, since some annotations might not be valuable for some articles where an image appears. That would probably look like File_Annotations:Foobar.jpg/Painting_styles - where all of the relevant annotations for that are stored. But if two annotations from different layers overlap, we can show them side by side.

Oh, also, the "add annotation" button is a great idea. I don't know yet how I'd represent the parallel annotations, but I suspect it wouldn't be too difficult.

Since the 2016/2017 FileAnnotations prototype work is now quite outdated and both Wikidata and Commons have new features and design plans (like moving new features to Vue.js on Commons), and the extension is not actively under development, the best thing to do is close these tasks and create new ones when/if there's a team available to pick up development on this feature.
