Request creation of getstarted labs project
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Project Name: getstarted

Purpose: hosting a interact tool for gaining new volunteers

Wikitech username of requestor: Freddy2001

Brief description: On the JWPmeetup 2016, a dozen of young wikipedians figured out, how we can reach and win new volunteers for the Wikimedia projects.
The results (in german) of this three day meetup can be found here: https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/JWPmeetup_2016
One of the mentioned aspects was, that new authors feel often lost in the big Wikipedia world.
To fight against this, we want to set up a tool, where they can find help and hints for the first steps summarized on a appealing place and not everywhere distributed on the Wikipedia.
In this tool, they also should be able to interact, this can be help for teaching Wikipedia.
Additionally there should be an option for presenting or learning MediaWiki's features in a sandbox wiki on this tool instead of the production cluster.

Event Timeline

Just wondering, what makes this not-doable on tool labs?

Setting up a clean wiki sandbox environment on demand in the learning process with some "challanges" and tasks to lern for each subject and students, which eliminates itself after completing the section successfully or setting up the server side software of a chat, where the students can help each other would be very tricky and complex on tool labs (where we tried to set up the project first but had some problems there)

Thanks for the overview @Freddy2001. We'll get to this within the week.
