[SPIKE] Decide whether to show the sticky header in the talk namespace
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

T283505 introduces a new sticky header that will appear within the main namespace (others as well?) and T289641 started exploring what it could be like to introduce the sticky header within other namespaces, like talk.

This task involves the work with deciding whether the Editing Team will prioritize introducing the sticky header within the talk namespace as part of the work they are doing to make it easier for people to:

  1. Recognize talk pages as space to communicate with other people
  2. Identify and understand the conversations happening on talk pages
  3. Know what to do to participate on talk pages

Question(s) to answer

  • "Any reason why sticky is only available on the main page and not on a talk and history pages? Seems a bit weird to me. Both talk and history have links on the sticky header, but when you navigate to them then the sticky is gone. Especially when I visit someone's talk page I would like to be able to navigate to his/her user page. And talk pages can be quite long. Also if I get an answer here I will get a link to the bottom of this page. And I should see a sticky to be able to open the main page in a new tab or view other notifications." via @Nux in "Talk page and page history" on mediawiki.org

From the en-WP community angle, the important things to communicate in talk page headers are encapsulated in Template:Talk header, which we are increasingly moving toward using universally. While I don't think any of these really rise to the level of importance needed to be included in a sticky header, they're worth keeping in mind as the stuff we want editors going to a talk page to know/have access to:

  • "This is the talk page for discussing improvements to Foobar", addressing WP:NOTFORUM and linking the talk page guidelines.
  • Links for finding reliable sources (for articles)
  • Core content policies (for articles)
  • Access to talk page archives
  • Information about the talk page's automatic archiving settings (if applicable)
  • Links to core policies and guidelines relevant to talkspace, e.g. civility
  • Links to the newcomer editing tutorial and the help forums
