[Epic] Wikidata watchlist improvements (client)
Open, HighPublic

Description

Changes on wikidata that affect a page on the client wiki should be visible on user's watchlist just like local edits.

However we should be careful to:

  • avoid showing changes to connected item(s) that do not affect the local page (labels in other languages, etc)
  • be consistent across different interfaces (API query module, RSS feeds, RC, etc).
  • provide correct links to diffs and user pages on Wikidata
  • allow filtering out external changes

I proposed this task for the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey, do not hesitate to improve and develop the formulation there.

Sorry if I’m writing in the wrong place, couldn’t find a specific task about this and don’t know if I should file one. Is the appearance of multiple Wikidata changes on the same page in the watchlist the supposed behaviour? I am accustomed that edits on the watchlist show up only once per the affected page, but due to Wikidata edits enabled at ruwiki for me (and due to deeply regretful decision to expand edit summaries) the list looks like this right now:

image.png (666×1 px, 89 KB)

I would like to know if that is a supposed behaviour (and then I’d know that I should just turn off this) or a bug that should be eventually fixed. Sorry if I’m writing in the wrong place.

@stjn Do edits to local pages only show up once for you? If so then yes we have a bug there.

Yes, other pages are showing up only once (I don’t use enhanced RC or anything like that), Wikidata changes are showing up a lot (this page is in my watchlist 47 times, for example).

It should not show, linked to 'x' language wiki, unlinked from 'x' language wiki on enwiki watchlist. It should only show changes to property values and qualifiers.

A task related to this was included in the most recent community wishlist. It didn't score that highly (I'd guess because people didn't understand what it was from the title), which is unfortunate, as it's very important. For Wikidata to address its dire vandalism problem, it badly needs the help of Wikipedians monitoring their watchlist. But many Wikipedians have and will continue to turn off Wikidata updates so long as they continue to spam watchlists with "Jane Smith was just labeled Jane Smith in Polish" updates, or P and Q changes are displayed as just meaningless numbers. Please let the community know if we can be of any help with this, and I hope it is prioritized.
