(just an idea) We could de-emphasize the W a bit more so the lambda is more pronounced

I doubt this favicon is salvageable. When a logo has tiny details such as this logo has, companies and websites usually make a modified version of it for small sizes such as the favicon size, with these details removed. Otherwise, they are just indistinguishable. I suggest getting rid ot W completely and keeping the lambda.

Yeah, if you want to keep the general logo intact, just using the lambda is probably the most practical solution.
And by the way, a black and white version of the Wikifunctions logo exists, you can see it on the Wikifunctions home page, and it's even worse.
