Yeah, it seems to be working now.

@MZMcBride ironically being on-duty I just looked at the tickets with the "operations" tag these last few days, so I didn't notice this. However I'll take a look at the logs.

That error message usually appears when the original is smaller than the scaled dimensions we want to achieve, and from a quick look this seems a bug worth digging into.

I'll take a look at the logs.

I can load the image but still worth investigating if it is related to hhvm imagescalers

I took a look at the logs, even tried to re-render the thumbnail at different sizes, but chances are the logs were already lost in the reimaging of either mw1154 or mw1155 which happened between when @MZMcBride created the ticket and when he pinged me :(

However, since this is not happening anymore, I am not too worried. I strongly suspect this has nothing to do with the HHVM scalers, though.

I just noticed that someone did, in fact, upload a version of this image that was smaller than 500px: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pluto_by_LORRI_and_Ralph,_13_July_2015.jpg#filehistory. Given when I reported this bug, if the image scalers were lagging for some reason when generating the 500px thumbnail and were grabbing the smaller version of the image, you'd get this error about thumbnail generation. But that wouldn't explain why generating a 501px thumbnail would work... hmmm.

Do we happen to collect/log instances of how often we encounter this specific error ("Image was not scaled, is the requested width bigger than the source?")? Mostly just curious, but perhaps this type of behavior happens occasionally with reuploads? Like there's some kind of lag?

Not sure who might know the answer - @Joe? Or rather someone from Multimedia?

And I'm closing this as declined as the testcase is gone and the logs are gone... :-/
