Several contributors came to me complaining about difficulty to upload videos on commons, due to video format/encoding restriction.
While mediawiki should certainly keep its policy to use only FLOSS formats and codecs, maybe it would be interesting to ease contributors life by allowing any video format for which there are FLOS transcoding softwares available.
The transcoding may be done on sever hosted in a land where software patent isn't legal, to avoid legal issues.
Now that may still be to technically/legally troublesome, and we should just point this people to kind documentation/courses that will teach them how to transcode their video.
