Difficulty with image upload wizard on Commons
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I have tried four times now to upload an image to Commons without success. I get to the point in the process where I am asked to give the file a name— the default name isn't descriptive enough. So I place my cursor in the box, delete the existing text, and start typing "Self Portrait (La Perla #2)". About the time I get to the end of that the box becomes covered with diagonal gray lines (signaling, I think, that there is some problem or other with my title) though I am not notified of any actual error (like, "A file by that name already exists"— I do NOT get that error message and I have checked to verify that no file by that name does actually exist; there isn't one). I go ahead anyway, and am able to enter the artist's name, a source, the date of creation, and a description, but the title box remains covered in gray lines. I then go to hit "Next" and nothing happens. I have tried restarting Firefox and trying again— same problem. I have tried a different browser (Chrome) and the same thing happens. I have tried completely restarting my computer and opening up both of those browsers again and uploading again— same problem results. I've been uploading images to Commons for years and never seen it get stuck like this. Am wondering if there is some problem with the Wizard itself rather than with my or my attempt to upload. Please check into this. Thanks.

Update:

Apparently the problem has to do with the Uploader's attempt to warn me that a file with my typed name already exists (when I type "Self" and then hit the space bar, I am told that "Self.jpg already exists" and to choose another file name— that I go on to type "portrait" sometimes does and sometimes does not register, and when it does, I am told that "Self portrait.jpg already exists". But of course, I am not done yet... except that no matter what I type next, I am still told that "Self portrait.jpg already exists". The upload wizard is doing its best, with each key stroke, to keep me from choosing a file name that already exists... But in its attempt of doing so, it is preventing me from finishing typing a file name that I know does not exist and I just wish it would let me finish before telling me that what I want can't be done.

I also wonder if there is also a issue with regard to the use of which characters cannot be used as part of a file name. I assume that the slash symbol cannot be used, and probably the asterisk and the tilde. It would likely be helpful to uploaders to be specifically told what characters they may NOT use when picking a filename, so that they don't keep changing other aspects of that name and never getting one that is acceptable to the system. Just a thought.

Thank you for the bug report (and sorry for late reply).

The false errors about already existing files are caused by T135394, which we're working on. I'm not entirely sure what could be causing the rest of the behaviors you describe.
