codfw: (2) servers request for ORES redis databases
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Labs Project Tested: ores
Site/Location: CODFW
Number of systems: 2
Service: ores
Networking Requirements: internal
Processor Requirements: https://tools.wmflabs.org/nagf/?project=ores#h_ores-redis-02_cpu points out that we are probably OK with a x3450.
Memory: 8G
Disks: > 20Gb
NIC(s): 1x1Gbps
Partitioning Scheme: unimportant
Other Requirements:

This task is similar to T119598 for eqiad. In that task, the chosen boxes were:

Dell PowerEdge R420, Single Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2450, 16GB RAM Dual 500GB SATA.

As far as requirements those boxes are perfect, since perhaps it makes sense to use the same if there are any available in CODFW.

We don't really have any in warranty spares in codfw that come near this low a specification.

Our current spare hardware in codfw:

Two systems with: Dual Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2640 (2.6/8), 64GB, Dual 1TB SATA
Three systems with: Dual Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2623 (2.6/4), 32GB, Quad 4TB SATA

These all seem like major overkill. These seem very low requirements, but I assume they cannot go into ganeti (since @akosiaris is the guy who setup our ganeti cluster, he would know at the time of requesting hardware), so we'll have to request new hardware for this.

@akosiaris: Any idea on timeline for implementation? I ask since I don't see any projected purchase for these, so we'll need to add to the purchase plan.

@RobH

We will need these for the next switchover to CODFW, as ORES is not operational in CODFW without those. So the Jan 2017-March 2017 quarter is the target here.

As far as the ganeti discussion goes, we 're blocked on getting rack row redundancy for ganeti first. After that is achieved, we could host these into ganeti indeed.

My two cents: since hw requirements are so modest we could also imitate what we did for poolcounter, namely one VM and one bare metal on a different row

akosiaris claimed this task.

I think we can resolve this. We have 1 VM and 1 hardware box for this and seem to be working fine.
