Notes in VE by ref grouping
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

VisualEditor does not provide an option to have notes in an article. It is possible to have notes using the current mechanism, by using reference grouping like <references group="note" /> .

Unfortunatelly VE cannot detect the references group unless a real note <ref group="note">...</ref> is detected. So one still has to turn to source code to add notes.

Please:

  • allow insertion of a "note" reference group (insert/references list) in VE, even if it does not yet exist.
  • give the option for the note group to be detected by VE and allow adding notes (Cite/manual/basic form/options/select group), despite the absence of any note in the article. Keep in mind its possible usage with preloaded article templates (we should detect notes either way, not only if they get added by button).

I do not understand the issue, sorry.

If you want a reference to be in the group "foo", you click "Cite" > "Manual" > "Basic", then click in the group box type in "foo" (or select from the drop-down).

If you want a references list for the group "foo", you click "Insert" > "References list", then click "Edit" and in the group box type in "foo".

Am I missing something?

You are right, it works this way. It is not obvious that one can type in a new group, it seems only possible to select one from the list. It might help to change message to:
"Use this group (or type in a new one)"
