Description

In line with Technical Collaboration’s goal of improving outreach and retention through the Onboarding New Developers program, this task is about organizing a 7-day long workshop for university students in India in collaboration with CIS India (https://cis-india.org).

Wikimedia had eight student developers from India who participated in the 2017’s Google Summer of Code and Outreachy Summer edition. For this workshop, we are planning on inviting these recent outreach program graduates to mentor other participants on projects they developed as interns and teach skills they gained needed to work on Wikimedia tech. For recruiting participants, we would be reaching out to students enrolled in a university, are passionate about Wikimedia’s vision, and interested in getting involved in our projects.

Felt like a rush to organizing this workshop by the last week of February. The plan would be to conduct this workshop in the same format either at the end of this year or beginning of next with full-fledged prep work in place ahead.

Srishti to circle back with CIS, India in one to two months. By then do more investigation of the budget, come up with any improvements we should make to the earlier workshop format and the event planning roadmap.

@srishakatux Didi, Is this only for university students? And What who are passionate about Wikimedia’s vision, and Strongly Supporting Wikimedia’s Tech.

Team change, annual program change: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Technology/Annual_Plans/FY2019/TEC10:_Build_Technical_Community (Outcome 8). There may not be room for this outreach activity, un-assigning myself for this task for now but might like to wear my volunteer hat at some point and come back to this!
