Documentation for bringing a MediaWiki site online
Open, MediumPublic

Description

Recently someone asked on Facebook what to do to bring their local MediaWiki installation online, and I was suprised to not find any documentation on this (apart from a list of MediaWiki hosting services). Having nice, step-by-step guides on how to create a wiki (or move an exiting one) on a shared host / VPS / wikifarm provider seems like a fairly fundamental step in supporting third-party users.

edit: sorry disregard this post, I made a fool of myself, and just need some sleep. Quite embarrassing,

The Archlinux wiki page seems like a good start, for a proper step by step guide.

I am concerned about user restrictions for mediawiki.org, it really inhibits the health of the mediawiki documentation. I don't know the history of what led to these protections, but perhaps a conversation on revisiting their need would be beneficial.

For example, one of the most important pages, the Installation guide has not been updated since 2016, which says a lot.

Just as a whole, I would be extremely interested in doing documentation work and community building.
