One possible thing to do here:
Contact maintainer mentors of projects listed on [[mw:New_Developers]] to evaluate if having featured projects is helpful
Description
Event Timeline
Here is the email I'm planning to send to all the mentors whose project is listed on the New Developers page:
Hello!
The Developer Advocacy team is planning to refresh the New Developers page on MediaWiki.org!
I'm reaching out to all mentors to learn if their project still meets the criteria of a featured project: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/New_Developers/Featured_Projects#How_to_become_a_featured_project_recommended_to_new_developers.
I've two questions:
- Do you have a sense of whether the addition of your project to New Developers page helped in drawing more contributors? Do you have any stories to share?
- Would you like to keep your project in the list of featured projects on the New Developers page? Does it still meet the featured project criteria?
After gathering responses from mentors/maintainers, it would be nice to recruit more projects anyways for the New Developers page (via Wikitech-I).
Thanks for planning to do this! (Personally I'd replace "planning to refresh" with "wondering about the usefulness and future of".)
Reposting my answer also here to make it public :)
Hello,
I think our project is the most recent addition to the list (May 2019). As such I have got just a little experience to share. From what I can tell (but I'm unsure, whether it is related to the New Developers page):
Pywikibot project is really old, but for a really long time lacks developers and attention. Our team contains few stable developers, few stable supporters and few one-time developers. In last 4 months, one old stable supporter and one new stable developer showed up and many one-time committers showed up as well. This can be a result of many other propagation-related actions we've done, like meetups at WM hackathons and Wikicons, or promoting Pywikibot at Wikimania. But I hope also this page helps to draw a good attention we all wish. We would like to keep our project in the list and I hope we still meet the criteria.
In case of any follow-up questions, feel free to ask :)
Cheers,
Pavel Dvorak (Dvorapa)
Copying my answer here:
I believe it helped, after listing the Library Card platform we began to receive some interest from volunteer developers. I can't say for sure that's where they came from but we don't really do any other outreach to developers so it's likely this is how they found us. So we'd definitely like to still be listed! It looks like we still meet all the criteria.
Sent the email to Wikitech-I asking for new projects for New Developers guide https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2019-October/092662.html.
(There is nothing more left for me to do in this task. We removed one project from the list and decided to keep the remaining. That said, we can revisit this task later if necessary)
