Print mode needs padding around the sides, and maybe print-mode links.

Description:
A little padding on the sides would help readability, and should be easy enough to deal with without interfering substantially with printing.

But this raises the issue that "print mode" might also be an alternate view mode. For some reason "print mode" preserves links to other articles, which suggests its usage as a view mode is not far-fetched, even if its for some reason not desirable. A couple of minor improvements/ideas in that direction:

  • Maybe a Special:Print:Foo interface would help inasfar as coding print-links go.
  • Keyboard shortcut integration: shorcuts like alt+shift+e and alt+shift+d would open up edit mode or the talk page, respectively.
  • Branding: Ostensibly an alternate mode of viewing would require us to put a smallish WP/WM logo on it.

Still valid (no padding in print view on 1.25) but isn't that something that browsers and their printing code handle nowadays?

With regard to an "alternate view mode" I'd rather stick to the mobile view, e.g. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Foobar instead of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Foobar&printable=yes

The margins issue is already tracked in T19297: Add margins to printable css style. The other suggestions are not very likely to be implemented due to overhead and complexity it would introduce. Most browsers and operating systems have print previewing built in, so it's not unimaginable that printable version will disappear at some point T167956: Deprecate printable version mode.
