Decide upon basic P31 values for frequently-used kinds of Wikimedia Commons files
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Make a decision on which P31 values (e.g. photograph? map? graphic? etc) in StructuredDataOnCommons to use for very typical Wikimedia Commons files.

Some brainstorming and examples in this document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yIMSUGGb9hkObEtpJ2EYVZe4r5vfKQ2cT0PF9pEXyl4/edit#

Event Timeline

@Multichill and I have started brainstorming this among the both of us, and we discussed (among other things) the following things to take into account:

  • P31 for media files helps to make files more discoverable, can be used to inform the kind of infobox templates to use, and in the future can also influence constraints and be connected to Shape Expressions.
  • Precision and correctness are important, but it's also important to keep this quite simple and understandable for end users
  • It would be nice if there's a limited amount of options for P31. More in-depth characteristics of a file can also be covered in other properties and in qualifiers, etc

Hi, the Wikimedia Hackathon 2020 took place two months ago. Can you please provide an update on this task? If this task was worked on and finished, then please change the task status to resolved. If this task is still valid and should stay open, then please associate an active project tag to this task so this task can be found on an active project workboard. Thanks!

@Spinster: Could you please answer the last comment? Thanks in advance!

This was just a task for one of the in person events (feels like ages ago!). Online discussion continued on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Structured_data/Modeling
