Show page list based on pagination string stored on Commons (files currently not used on WS)
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Commons has some files that haven't been used on any Wikisource yet: sample file

It would interesting if one could add there a pagination string and preview the list of pages either on Commons or at a Wikisource in preview

This could be done by (e.g.)

  • fetching the string from Commons when (pre)viewing a new "Livre" page at https://fr.wikisource.org (or another ws)
  • enabling rendering of <pagelist 1to6=- 7=titre 8to11=- 12=8 353to356=- /> on file description pages on Commons (with some template)
  • build a LUA version of pagination string parsing

Maybe this is already somehow included in T253458 or T154413

Event Timeline

@Esc3300 Would there be any gain in initializing the page-list tag over at Wikidata/Commons instead of using the widget at Wikisource?

Once T253458 finishes, the file should be accessible directly from the Wikisource Index: page while creating the page-list string. (rough prototype on en.wikisource.beta.wmflabs.org)

@Soda :

I think there are at least seven advantages:

  • File description pages are easily visible to all users of Commons files (on Wikipedia when one page is displayed, when searching on Commons, at Wikidata, etc. ).
  • The pagination on the file description page allows to view a page of a book easily.
  • Many djvu/pdf files available on Commons are not transcribed at Wikisource and may never be. This is especially true now that ten thousands of Files_from_the_Biodiversity_Heritage_Library are being mass-uploaded.
  • Even if just the index page exists (e.g. sample), it's unclear if having only that part there is really helpful for users of the file (if no transcription follows). Some Wikisource might not want otherwise unused index pages (at least some language versions, I'd guess).
  • Pagination of a djvu/pdf is file metadata. As such, I think it should be included also as structured data on Commons.
  • Most other fields of index pages are already available on file description pages.
  • It might get Commons contributors to added data later useful for Wikisource contributors.

I suppose it could still be interesting to have (red) links to Wikisource "Page"-pages: this would allow to view the page/get the OCR function. Alternatively the link could just be a link to the djvu/pdf page on Commons.
